Storage Container Update

A summary of the disaster response supplies storage container project was recounted for new members.  Discussion continued regarding location possibilities.  No response has been received from Brian Judd regarding Magnuson Park or Olympic Sculpture Park.  (Julie Creahan of Seattle Art Museum confirmed later on 6/17 via e-mail that the OSP cannot host a container.)

Cory proposed a plan to purchase two small containers (Jobox-style) instead of a 20-foot shipping container.  Advantages of smaller containers are:  Easier to find a site to locate the boxes; more than one can be purchased with our current available funds; boxes can be placed at different locations to serve different areas of the region; easier to move to another location or a disaster site.  Cory further described the advantages of placing one or two of the containers at the Frye Art Museum property, where sites have already been identified and approved by FAM:  She could put some of the Frye’s disaster supplies into the box making them available to others (which would be replaced when used), thereby freeing up some of her interior storage space, and saving money for SHERN because she has already bought the supplies; the boxes would be visible to staff and security cameras, located on bedrock instead of in a liquefaction zone, and more centrally located to members.  Some disadvantages would be materials that may not fit (such as folding tables) which means prioritizing what will be purchased, and level of ease of access to materials packed in the container (rather than walking into a container).  The storage box size would necessitate re-evaluation of what supplies would fit in it.  The working supply list is based on earlier surveys and the grant proposal and should be revised with input from new members.  There is a variety of height options, 60” and 72” the longest, and approximately 30” wide. Laura raised the question of placing larger items in institutions, instead of the Jobox, but they would not be available over weekends. Large items would be things such as a generator, sump pump, dehumidifier, hand truck, folding tables, and wet/dry vacuum.

It was proposed that with smaller boxes and evaluation of contents, we could create a ‘paper’ box and ‘object’ box.  Using smaller containers, the project can be done in phases and upgraded as needed.  A question was raised whether the container would be bolted or otherwise secured.

MOHAI is still a possibility for a shipping container, but depends on a security fence, painting the container, and issues discussed at previous meetings. The update from Allison re: Museum of Flight is that it is currently not possible to site a shipping container because of their new pavilion project, but she can ask again in August.  A Jobox may be possible at the archdiocese of Seattle and Seattle municipal archives because of its smaller footprint.

Our 501c3 status and use of Allied Arts for grant funds and donation acknowledgements was reviewed.

Loretta offered to look on Craigslist for used storage boxes.  Carol raised the question of a shed instead of a Jobox which would be larger than a Jobox but smaller than a shipping container.  She will look into options.

There was discussion about a generator:  purpose, size, power and the appropriate use of funds to meet these needs.

In July, Laura and Stephanie will work on revising the supply list, narrow down initial needs, and research and plan for two storage boxes.  Data will be presented at the August 26 meeting.
